NEW JERSEY INSURANCE PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR AWARD HISTORY

The N.J. Insurance Professional/Woman of the Year Award was founded in 1977 by Philip Feldinesser of Global American Insurance Managers. The award was developed in honor of Ada V. Doyle and Claire M. McCurry. Each of these women were members of the local NAIW association -Insurance Women of New Jersey - the first local association founded in New Jersey.

Ada Doyle was a charter member of the Insurance Women of N.J. when it was formed in 1938. In 1940, she represented her association at a Conference in Denver, Colorado, at which time the National Association of Insurance Women — NAIW, International was formed. Ada served her local association in many capacities and was also the first National Education Chairman. In 1942 she was elected the National President of NAIW. Claire M. McCurry served the local association as well as having been the National Corresponding Secretary from 1942-44.

In 1983 Global American Insurance Managers merged with Specialty Coverage Concepts, which later merged with Insurex Inc.

This award is now sponsored by the Professional Insurance Agents of New Jersey and is presented annually to recognize the achievements and contributions of a N.J. NAIW member.

Each of the N.J. associations may nominate one member for this award. The candidate must have been a member of NAIW for at least five years, and have not been the recipient of this award in the past five years.

The individual selected should demonstrate a commitment to loyalty, education, and fellowship. She should demonstrate an active role in NAIW, as well as, involvement in other areas that may include industry, community, charitable or religious activities.

NEW JERSEY ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AWARD HISTORY

In 2004 the Council Director asked the Awards Chair why we did not have a New Jersey Rookie of the Year Award.  Simply put, we did not have a sponsor.  Enter Leo Hogan, Chairman and CEO of Cumberland Insurance Group.

The Rookie of the Year Award was developed by the New Jersey Council of NAIW and Cumberland Insurance Group in 2004.  The trophy has been referred to as the “Stanley Cup” of the State awards and is passed from winner to winner at the annual State awards luncheon.

The purpose of the award is to  recognize the accomplishments of a new member who has made a significant contribution to NAIW within two years of joining the association.

The active pursuit of continuing professional education, both from NAIW and from other sources, NAIW-related activities and other activities that show the candidate’s  dedication to NAIW and the insurance industry are all considered by the judges.

The trophy and  the $300 scholarship are provided by Cumberland Insurance Group.
